パウロの手紙はどれほど早くから読まれていたか

パウロの手紙の初期の受容は、一通ずつ、異なる種類の認識を示す証言を通じて見えてきます。それぞれの証拠としての重みの違いを保つ必要があります。

パウロの手紙はどれほど早くから知られており、最初期の証言は実際に何を示すのでしょうか？

通常の1世紀末という年代づけによれば、『クレメンスの第一の手紙』は、コリントの分派についてのパウロの手紙を明示的に振り返っています。ほかの初期の著者は、個々の手紙を引用したり反響させたりしています。2世紀の集成と紀元200年ごろのパピルスは、また別の証拠を加えます。これらを合わせると、使用が確認できる時期が分かりますが、証言の年代の不確かさや、共通する言葉づかいの可能性によって、比較に限界が生じる場合もあります。

コリントで再び手に取られた手紙

『クレメンスの第一の手紙』47章では、ローマの教会がコリントの信徒に対し、分派についてパウロが以前に書いた手紙に立ち返るよう求めています。パウロ、ケファ、アポロという名前から、主題はコリントの信徒への手紙一1章10～12節だと分かります。ここでは著者がパウロを名指しし、特定の手紙の議論を思い起こさせています。この証拠は、ある使徒への一般的な賛辞より具体的です。ローマはその手紙を知り、コリントもそれを認識すると期待していました。

『クレメンスの第一の手紙』は通常、紀元95～97年ごろとされますが、提案される年代は70年ごろから140年ごろに及びます。この初期の証言は、そのため、自身の年代の不確かさも伴っています。それでも力のある証拠です。パウロに帰される特定可能な手紙が、別の教会内の争いに対処するために振り返られていたのです。著者が、伝統的にパウロに帰される十三通すべてを持っていたとは限りませんし、後代の手紙に似るすべての箇所が、その手紙から来たとも限りません。

引用、暗示、反響

受容の記録では、明確な引用、可能性の高い暗示、可能性のある反響を区別します。イグナティオスがエフェソの人々に宛てた手紙の18章は、コリントの信徒への手紙一1章20節の言い回しをよく再現し、その周囲も十字架についての議論に似ています。出典が明記されなくても、言葉がそれと分かることはあります。彼の手紙は通常、紀元105～117年ごろとされますが、もっと後に位置づける人もいます。

反響の判断には、いっそう慎重さが必要です。イグナティオスがスミルナの人々に宛てた手紙は、キリストがダビデの子孫であることと、神の子であることを、ローマの信徒への手紙1章3～4節に似た言葉で組み合わせています。パウロ自身がそこで、より古い信仰告白を用いている可能性があるため、イグナティオスもローマの信徒への手紙を借用せずに同じ告白を共有していたのかもしれません。『クレメンスの第一の手紙』の悪徳の一覧は、おそらくローマの信徒への手紙を暗示しますが、そのような一覧は一般的でもありました。紀元180年ごろ、エイレナイオスはローマの信徒への手紙を明示的に名指しします。この帰属の明示が答える問いは、それ以前の言葉の類似とは異なります。

スミルナのポリュカルポスがフィリピに宛てた手紙は、通常、紀元110～140年ごろとされ、テモテへの手紙一6章7節と6章10節におそらく依拠する、金銭についての言葉を含んでいます。格言との並行関係があるため、共有された教えである可能性も残ります。彼がその言い回しを知っていた可能性が高いことは、受容にとって重要です。しかし、パウロがテモテへの手紙一を書いたかという論争には決着をつけられません。

著者、宛先、人名を区別する

書名は、見落としやすい混同を隠すことがあります。ポリュカルポスがフィリピの信徒に宛てた手紙は、パウロの文書の証言であり、パウロ自身のフィリピの信徒への手紙ではありません。同じく、イグナティオスがローマ人に宛てた手紙は、ローマの信徒への手紙とは別の著作です。著者を宛先と併せて記すと、証拠を正しい文書に結びつけておけます。

同じ個人名にも、同じ注意が必要です。イグナティオスは、フィレモンへの手紙を反響させているかもしれない言葉の近くで、司教オネシモという人に触れています。この組み合わせから、パウロの手紙のオネシモと同一人物だという案が生まれました。しかし、この名前は一般的であり、同定はなお証明されていません。文学的な反響の可能性だけで、名前を持つ二人を、一人の確立した伝記にまとめることはできません。

集成は読者が何を受け入れたかを示す

2世紀半ばのマルキオンの版は、フィレモンへの手紙を含む十通のパウロ書簡を集める一方、テモテへの手紙一、テモテへの手紙二、テトスへの手紙を含みませんでした。この版は失われ、内容は反対者、とりわけ3世紀初めに書いたテルトゥリアヌスを通じて知られます。マルキオンが何を受け入れ、何を変更したかを述べる際には、その敵対的な報告に依存していることを、はっきりさせておく必要があります。

ムラトリ目録は、パウロの名のもとに十三通の手紙を受け入れています。通常は紀元170～200年ごろとされますが、4世紀に位置づける研究者もいます。これらは、それぞれの、時には争われる年代に、受け入れられていた集成の記録です。マルキオンの省略だけでは、牧会書簡を年代づけられません。拒否、知らなかったこと、後代の成立という説明が、いずれも提案されています。一覧がパウロに帰属させていても、それは著者についての判断を記録するものであり、問題を決着させるものではありません。

現存する写本は別の証言

通常、筆跡から紀元200年ごろとされるパピルス46は、広範なパウロ書簡の集成を残しています。ヘブライ人への手紙をローマの信徒への手紙の後に置いています。この配列は、そのコデックスの利用者が文書をどうまとめたかを示しますが、ヘブライ人への手紙の著者を確定できません。末尾の葉が失われているため、かつてフィレモンへの手紙や牧会書簡を含んでいたかも確かではありません。

フィレモンへの手紙は、文献上の受容と物理的な現存との違いを示します。最初の確かな受容の証拠は、後にテルトゥリアヌスが報告したマルキオンの集成です。知られている最古の写本であるパピルス87は、筆跡から3世紀とされます。この断片は、そのころまでに写されていたことを示すのであって、手紙の成立年代を確定するものではありません。この二つの時間の流れを区別すれば、それぞれの証言から、実際に残されているものを受け取れます。
