为什么保罗把教会比作身体？

身体的比喻说明，不同恩赐的人在基督里彼此相属。恩赐为群体的益处而存在；运用恩赐是否服事了教会所认信的主，必须用爱来衡量。

哥林多前书12章指出，若各肢体都要求同一角色，身体便无法运作；显眼的肢体也不能排斥安静的肢体。保罗同时挑战自卑与自大。圣灵跨越民族和社会界线，把人联结起来。因此，教会生活不只是观看宗教表演。面对需要和能力不同的人，成员有责任给予关注、尊重和具体照顾。

哥林多前书12:12–27

保罗的清单包括讲说、教导、帮助、治理，以及圣灵的其他表现。这种多样性拒绝把所有人放在一架梯子上，争夺最耀眼的能力。重要的问题是：恩赐如何使别人得益？罗马书12章把恩赐的使用与谦卑、忠实参与联系起来。有责任的职位，从来不免除道德问责，也不免除接受帮助的需要。

哥林多前书13章位于讨论属灵恩赐的两章之间。因此，关于爱的描述首先对分裂的教会生活说话，不只是婚礼用语。14章继续强调听得明白和造就教会。若听众不能理解，讲者的热情并不够。清楚的解释、需要时的翻译、有秩序的参与、对初访者的体谅，都属于认真敬拜的内容。

恩赐持续论者期待预言、方言等恩赐继续存在；恩赐停止论者把某些恩赐特别联系于使徒奠基的时期。单凭哪种标签，都不能证明一间教会的爱与忠心。读者应考察论据，区分非凡宣称与经过核实的事件。保罗要求检验、秩序和共同益处，使属灵语言不能成为抵挡合理问题的挡箭牌。
