在罗马书3章,保罗先指出犹太人和外族人都在罪的权势之下,然后解释神在基督里的拯救。称义关乎人在神面前被算为义;这种法庭用语涉及罪责与神公义的审判。保罗排除了夸口的理由。初次来到基督面前的人,无须先证明自己的道德优越、特殊血统或出色的宗教表现。这恩赐取决于神已经成就的工作。

亚伯拉罕为何重要
罗马书4章以亚伯拉罕说明,信心和应许在割礼之前。这既关乎个人,也关乎群体:罪人如何蒙接纳?犹太人和外族人如何同属一个家?信心是倚靠神的应许,不是另一种功劳。阅读亚伯拉罕的例子时,要联系上下文的论证,不要把保罗的教导缩减成一句关于个人努力的口号。

恩典带来生命改变
保罗随即拒绝一种推论:既然恩典丰富,就可以继续犯罪。罗马书6章通过与基督同死同复活,说明信徒新的归属。加拉太书把信心与实际的爱联系起来。因此,善行是这种生命不可缺少的部分,却不能成为在神面前夸口的另一根基。悔改、慷慨和诚实生活,都表明对基督的倚靠,而不是离开他自立。
